How Scania is helping Marks & Spencer on their way to Net Zero

Scania UK is helping UK retail giant Marks & Spencer (M&S) on their journey to net zero by supporting them decarbonise their fleet of trucks.

This year will see more than 120 new Scania compressed gas-powered (CNG) vehicles join M&S’s growing low emission fleet of trucks, as the retailer aims to achieve its ambition to be a net zero business across its value chain by 2040.

By adding these new Scania gas trucks, M&S are taking a big step towards cutting its fleet’s overall emissions, as each vehicle has the potential to save more than 85% on CO2 emissions produced, compared to the diesel vehicles they are replacing.

Julian Bailey, Head of Group Transport at M&S, said: “Moving to lower-carbon logistics with reduced dependency on diesel and the increased use of new technologies and lower carbon fuels is key to achieving our Plan A Net Zero ambitions.

“We tried a range of different technologies and have chosen Bio-CNG as a key solution for decarbonising our logistics fleet as it is a proven, flexible and cost-efficient fuel supported by mature infrastructure.”

Kevin Lanksford, Fleet and Specialist Services Director at Scania UK, said: “We are pleased to be able to work with Marks and Spencer to help them achieve their sustainability ambitions.

“At Scania, we believe that reaching net zero requires us all to do the right thing, which means working closely, in partnership, to achieve these ambitious aims.

“The delivery of these gas vehicles throughout 2026, is just the beginning and only part of the story. There is an immense amount of work that goes unseen behind the scenes to make these partnerships fruitful for all involved. That’s testament to Simon Gray, who leads Scania’s involvement with M&S, and the wider Scania UK and M&S teams, to work together in collaboration for the same end goals.”

Getting underneath the skin of this deal

So why did M&S pick gas-powered vehicles in their pursuit of becoming a net zero business? And what makes these Scania trucks the perfect addition to their growing low-emission fleet?

Who better to tell us than Simon Gray, Specialist Sales Manager at Scania UK. Before we go into more detail, it’s worth explaining his background, as he played an instrumental role in transitioning the operating fleet for one of M&S’s biggest competitors.

Coming from an engineering background, Simon played an influential role, in starting the decarbonisation journey at John Lewis Partnership.
