During Brake’s Road Safety Week, which this year focused on the message ‘safe vehicles save lives’, Northgate Vehicle Hire is spotlighting the role of intelligent vehicle technology in preventing collisions and improving driver behaviour.
More than 12,000 Northgate vehicles are now equipped with telematics, giving fleets greater visibility of risk. Central to this is Northgate’s Driver League Table, included in its latest telematics dashboard, ranking drivers by safety performance. The table provides objective scoring for every driver in a fleet, allowing managers to quickly identify trends, coach consistently, and incentivise safer behaviour.
Every driver score is backed by detailed event analysis. Operators can drill down into each vehicle or driver to see every incident captured under ABC – Acceleration, Braking and Cornering. Each recorded event is paired with a 15-second video clip captured by the vehicle’s on-board camera system, giving crucial context to sudden movements, harsh manoeuvres, near misses and potential collision risks.
This combination of data plus video allows fleets to distinguish between genuine safety concerns and unavoidable events, while providing powerful coaching material for drivers.
On top of customer dashboards, Northgate produces monthly performance reports that benchmark driver behaviour across the fleet. These insights help businesses identify patterns, understand whether risk is increasing or improving, and focus training where it is needed most.
Northgate’s telematics and camera technology aligns closely with the pillars highlighted by Brake for Road Safety Week, especially the principles of managing driver safety, using technology to prevent crashes, and ensuring vehicles remain roadworthy and compliant.
“Road Safety Week is a powerful reminder that technology has a key role to play in preventing avoidable tragedies on our roads,” said David Fenton, Product Development Manager at Northgate Vehicle Hire. “Our investment in smarter telematics gives customers clearer visibility of risk and creates practical opportunities to help drivers develop safer habits. Safer vehicles and safer driving go hand in hand.”
Northgate will continue developing its telematics capabilities throughout 2026, with further enhancements planned to support customers in managing vehicle compliance, identifying emerging risks, and keeping their drivers safe on every journey.
